How-to: fitting your FreedConn intercom to a helmet (full-face, flip-up, open...)

Worried about mounting your kit wrong? Follow our step-by-step guide to install a FreedConn on any type of helmet. Tips for hiding the cables and placing the microphone

Step 1: The mount (clip or adhesive?)

Most FreedConn kits ship with two mounting systems:

The clip: this is the recommended method. It slides between the outer shell and the helmet's inner foam. It's sturdy and removable.

The 3M adhesive pad (velcro): only use it if your helmet's edge is too thick for the clip (often the case with certain carbon or high-end helmets like Schuberth).

Pro tip: place the module on the left side of the helmet. Why? To keep your right hand on the throttle while you adjust the volume.

Step 2: The earpieces (the secret to good sound)

This is where 90% of people get it wrong.

Location: your helmet probably has "pockets" built in for the earpieces at ear level. Fit the supplied velcro pads there.

Alignment: the earpiece must sit directly in front of your ear canal. If it's off by 2cm, you lose 50% of the volume and the bass (especially with the Hi-Res D7 models). Don't hesitate to use the supplied foam spacers to bring the earpiece closer to your ear if the pocket is too deep.

Step 3: The microphone (boom vs wired)

FreedConn includes two types of microphone in the box. Don't mix them up!

Full-face helmet: use the wired (flexible) microphone. It sticks via velcro directly onto the chin bar, just in front of your mouth.

Jet or modular helmet: use the boom microphone (rigid arm). The arm lets the microphone stay in front of your mouth even when you flip up the modular helmet's chin bar.

Careful: locate the small marker on the microphone foam. It must face your mouth for noise reduction to work.

Step 4: Cable management (the finishing touch)

Nobody wants dangling wires.

1. Once everything is plugged in, gently lift the cheek pads (they're often clipped in).

2. Route the cables behind these pads.

3. Use a plastic tool (or a credit card) to push the excess cable into the gaps between the shell and the inner lining. Only the plug that connects to the outer module should remain visible.

Conclusion: check before you ride

Once mounted, put the helmet on. The earpieces shouldn't fold your ears (too tight) or sit too far away. Turn on your FreedConn and play some music. If the sound is weak, it's usually because the earpieces are off-center. Adjust, and have a good ride!
