A motorcycle intercom with a built-in camera combines in one unit what most riders end up fitting twice: a Bluetooth communication system for the group or the pillion, and a dash cam that records the road continuously. One device on the shell, one battery to charge, one set of controls to operate with gloves on.

This is FreedConn's speciality, and it is also where the brand parts ways with the market leaders: their flagship headsets stop at communication and leave you to bolt on a separate action camera.

Why record your rides

  • Evidence after a crash. On a bike, liability often comes down to one rider's word against a driver's. Time-stamped footage settles it, with an insurer or in court.
  • Failure to give way and sudden lane changes. The most common situations, and the hardest to prove without footage.
  • Ride memories. A mountain pass, a tour, a club run: the camera is already rolling, there is nothing to set up.
  • The rider's actual point of view. Helmet-mounted, the camera follows your eyes, unlike a bike-mounted camera.

How to choose

1080p or 2K, what actually changes

1080p is more than enough to identify a nearby vehicle and reconstruct a collision. 2K becomes useful when you want to read a plate at distance, or publish your footage without compression ruining it. If safety is your main reason, the R1 Plus does the job. If you film to share, take a 2K model.

Field of view

120° frames the road and the vehicles around you. 140° widens towards the sides, which helps capture a vehicle pulling out or a side road exit, exactly the most common urban crash scenarios.

Storage and loop recording

All these models record in a loop in segments: when the card fills up, the oldest files are overwritten. There is nothing to manage day to day. Fit a class 10 microSD card, up to 64 GB on the R1 Plus and up to 256 GB on the R1 Pro.

Getting the files off

Built-in Wi-Fi lets you view and transfer footage straight to your phone through the app, without removing the card and without using mobile data.

Fitting to your helmet

These intercoms fit full-face, modular and open-face helmets. Each kit includes two mounting options, a clamp and a 3M adhesive pad, plus two microphone types: a boom mic for modular and open-face helmets, and a flat wired mic for full-face lids. Allow around fifteen minutes for a first fit.

Frequently asked questions

Does a camera intercom replace a GoPro?

For recording the road daily and having evidence after a crash, yes. It starts with the ride, loops without any input and needs no extra mount. An action camera is still better for polished video work, advanced stabilisation and slow motion, but it does not communicate and means a second device on your helmet.

Is dash cam footage admissible in Europe?

Rules vary by country. In most EU jurisdictions footage is accepted as evidence in a disputed insurance claim, and several countries have court decisions confirming it. Hand the file over unedited. Publishing footage follows different rules: blur faces and plates first, and check the local position before posting.

How long can you record for?

Loop recording means effectively continuously: the oldest segments are overwritten automatically. The real limit is battery, which drains faster with the camera running than in communication-only use. On long days, USB power while riding covers the whole trip.

Can you film and talk at the same time?

Yes, the two functions are independent. You can talk to your group, follow navigation and record simultaneously. On the R3 Pro, a dual-function microphone lets you pick between your voice and the ambient sound of the road.

Which memory card do I need?

A class 10 microSD card as a minimum. Up to 64 GB for the R1 Plus, up to 256 GB for the R1 Pro. A slow card causes recording dropouts, which is the first thing to check if something goes wrong.

Does it work in the rain?

Yes. Models in this range are IP65 rated, covering rain and spray encountered while riding. This is not immersion proofing: do not submerge the unit and store the helmet under cover.
