Motorcycle intercom: connecting your FreedConn to a Sena, Cardo or Midland

Intercom Moto : Comment connecter votre Freedconn à un Sena, Cardo ou Midland

Why connect a FreedConn intercom to a Sena, Cardo, or Midland?

Today, the motorcycle communication systems market is dominated by a few major brands: Sena, Cardo, Midland, and now FreedConn, which is gaining ground thanks to its unbeatable value for money and its models with a built-in 2K camera (R3 Pro, R1 Pro, R1 Plus).

If you ride in a group, chances are your riding buddies use a different brand. Good news: all modern FreedConn intercoms (T-MAX S Pro, KY Pro, HERO, FREE+ Mesh, R3 Pro) support universal Bluetooth pairing, which lets you establish a voice link with any Bluetooth motorcycle intercom, regardless of brand.

How does universal Bluetooth pairing work across different brands?

All recent Bluetooth motorcycle intercoms (4.0+) follow the same HFP (Hands-Free Profile) protocol, which lets 2 devices "see" each other as if they were a phone and a hands-free kit. That's exactly what's used to connect a FreedConn to a Sena 50S, Cardo Packtalk Edge, or Midland BTX1 Pro.

Limitations to know about: audio quality will be that of HFP (mono, 8 kHz), not the HD A2DP you get within the same brand. Range is limited to the native range of each device. And only 2 intercoms can be paired simultaneously in universal mode (beyond that, you need native Mesh like on the FREE+ range).

Pairing FreedConn with Sena (50S, 30K, 20S Evo, SMH10)

  1. On the Sena, hold the Phone button for 5 seconds until the LED flashes red/blue.
  2. On the FreedConn, hold the multifunction button for 8 seconds to enter universal pairing mode (LED also flashes red/blue).
  3. On either device, tap the Phone button once: the connection completes in 5-10 seconds.
  4. To start the conversation, briefly press your FreedConn's intercom button.

Tip: if the connection doesn't hold, do a full reset of the Sena (hold power for 12 seconds) and try again.

Pairing FreedConn with Cardo (Packtalk, Freecom, Spirit HD)

  1. On the Cardo, access the Configuration menu via the Cardo Connect app or by turning the dial.
  2. Turn on "Universal intercom pairing".
  3. On the FreedConn, switch to universal pairing mode (8-second long press).
  4. The Cardo detects the FreedConn as a "Generic Headset" and establishes the link.

The Cardo Packtalk Edge, with its DMC Mesh, can hold a simultaneous conversation with its Cardo group + 1 third-party Bluetooth intercom (the FreedConn in this case).

Pairing FreedConn with Midland (BTX1 Pro, BT Mini, BT Next Pro)

Midland pairing is the simplest: just turn on "Universal Pairing" in the Bluetooth menu (4 sec on the Volume+ button) and put your FreedConn in universal mode. The Midland LED turns purple to confirm.

FAQ — Cross-brand motorcycle intercom connection

Can I connect 3 intercoms of different brands at the same time?

In pure universal Bluetooth: no, only 2 devices. For 3+ multi-brand riders, the only way is for EVERYONE to have an open Mesh intercom (rare). FreedConn FREE+ Mesh is among the models compatible with other open Mesh systems.

Is audio quality degraded when mixing brands?

Yes, slightly. You go from same-brand HD audio to HFP voice audio. That's enough to communicate clearly, but shared music isn't possible.

Does the pairing stay remembered?

Yes, once the 2 devices are paired, they reconnect automatically every time they're powered on as long as they're in range.

What's the intercom range between different brands?

The lowest range applies. If your FreedConn does 1 km and the Sena 1.6 km, you're limited to 1 km in practice.
